RESUMO

Depression in older adults with cognitive impairment increases progression to dementia. Microbiota is associated with current mood and cognition, but the extent to which it predicts future symptoms is unknown. In this work, we identified microbial features that reflect current and predict future cognitive and depressive symptoms. Clinical assessments and stool samples were collected from 268 participants with varying cognitive and depressive symptoms. Seventy participants underwent 2-year follow-up. Microbial community diversity, structure, and composition were assessed using high-resolution 16 S rRNA marker gene sequencing. We implemented linear regression to characterize the relationship between microbiome composition, current cognitive impairment, and depressive symptoms. We leveraged elastic net regression to discover features that reflect current or future cognitive function and depressive symptoms. Greater microbial community diversity associated with lower current cognition in the whole sample, and greater depression in participants not on antidepressants. Poor current cognitive function associated with lower relative abundance of Bifidobacterium, while greater GABA degradation associated with greater current depression severity. Future cognitive decline associated with lower cognitive function, lower relative abundance of Intestinibacter, lower glutamate degradation, and higher baseline histamine synthesis. Future increase in depressive symptoms associated with higher baseline depression and anxiety, lower cognitive function, diabetes, lower relative abundance of Bacteroidota, and lower glutamate degradation. Our results suggest cognitive dysfunction and depression are unique states with an overall biological effect detectable through gut microbiota. The microbiome may present a noninvasive readout and prognostic tool for cognitive and psychiatric states.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales (CPE) are of serious concern worldwide due to high morbidity and mortality. AIM: To evaluate the impact of the result of a subsequent polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test for carbapenemase after serial negative surveillance cultures on positive culture conversion in patients with three consecutive negative surveillance cultures for CPE, and to identify risk factors for conversion. METHODS: A retrospective study of patients with positive CPE cultures on CHROMagar KPC medium was performed in a Korean tertiary hospital from October 2018 to December 2022. PCR for blaKPC, blaNDM, blaIMP, blaVIM, blaGES, and blaOXA-48 was performed after three consecutive negative rectal swab cultures. Clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients were compared according to whether follow-up PCR was positive (CNPP) or negative (CNPN). FINDINGS: Of 1075 patients with positive CPE cultures, 150 (14.0%) yielded three consecutive negative rectal swab cultures. Of these, 50 (33.3%) were CNPP, and 100 (66.7%) were CNPN. Risk factors associated with a positive PCR result on multivariate analysis were: age, central venous catheter, and Escherichia coli infection. CNPP patients were more likely to have positive culture conversion for CPE than CNPN patients (39/44 (88.6%) vs 21/50 (42.0%), P<0.001). In multivariate analysis, independent risk factors for culture conversion were: a positive PCR result after surveillance cultures, diabetes mellitus, central venous catheter, and Klebsiella pneumoniae. CONCLUSION: CNPP patients have higher rates of culture conversion than CNPN patients, and a follow-up PCR test after serial negative surveillance cultures is useful in deciding whether or not to discontinue contact precautions.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Despite the significant impact of multi-drug-resistant bacteraemia, especially extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Enterobacterales (ESBL-E) and carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE), the burden of disease has not been investigated thoroughly. AIM: To evaluate the clinical outcomes and socio-economic burden of ESBL-E and CRE bacteraemia nationwide in the Republic of Korea. METHODS: A search was undertaken for all cases of ESBL-E and CRE bacteraemia and matched controls in 10 hospitals in the Republic of Korea over 6 months. Patients with ESBL-E or CRE bacteraemia were classified as the R group, and matched controls with antibiotic-susceptible bacteraemia and without infection were classified as the S and N groups, respectively. Patients' clinical data were collected, and the economic burden was estimated based on medical expenses, loss of productivity and total costs. FINDINGS: In total, 795 patients were identified, including 265 patients with ESBL-E or CRE bacteraemia and their matched controls. The mean total length of stay for patients with ESBL-E and CRE in the R group was 1.53 and 1.90 times that of patients in the S group, respectively. The 90-day mortality rates for ESBL-E in the R and S groups were 12.1% and 5.6%, respectively, and the corresponding figures for CRE were 28.6% and 12.0%. There were significant differences in the total costs between the R, S and N groups for both ESBL-E and CRE (ESBL-E: $11,151 vs $8712 vs $6063, P=0.004; CRE: $40,464 vs $8748 vs $7279, P=0.024). CONCLUSION: The clinical and economic burden imposed by ESBL-E or CRE bacteraemia was extremely high. These findings suggest that efforts to control resistant bacteraemia are necessary to reduce this burden.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Antibiotic resistance threatens public health worldwide, and inappropriate use of antibiotics is one of the main causes. AIM: To evaluate qualitative use of antibiotics in asymptomatic bacteriuria (ABU) and urinary tract infection (UTI). METHODS: Cases of positive urine culture (≥105 colony-forning units/mL) performed in inpatient, outpatient and emergency departments in April 2021 were screened in 26 hospitals in the Republic of Korea. The cases were classified as ABU, lower UTI and upper UTI. The appropriateness of antibiotic use was evaluated retrospectively by infectious disease specialists using quality indicators based on clinical guidelines for ABU and UTI. RESULTS: This study included a total of 2697 patients with ABU or UTI. The appropriateness of antibiotic use was assessed in 1157 patients with ABU, and in 677 and 863 patients with lower and upper UTI, respectively. Among the 1157 patients with ABU, 251 (22%) were prescribed antibiotics without appropriate indications. In 66 patients with ABU in which antibiotics were prescribed with appropriate indications, the duration was adequate in only 23 (34.8%) patients. The appropriateness of empirical and definite antibiotics was noted in 527 (77.8%) and 353 (68.0%) patients with lower UTI, and 745 (86.3%) and 583 (78.2%) patients with upper UTI, respectively. The duration of antibiotics was adequate in 321 (61.8%) patients with lower UTI and 576 (78.7%) patients with upper UTI. CONCLUSIONS: This nationwide qualitative assessment of antibiotic use in ABU and UTI revealed that antibiotics were often prescribed inappropriately, and the duration of antibiotics was unnecessarily prolonged.

RESUMO

Post-induction hypotension is common and associated with postoperative complications. We hypothesised that pneumatic leg compression reduces post-induction hypotension in elderly patients undergoing robot-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy. In this double-blind randomised study, patients were allocated randomly to the pneumatic leg compression group (n = 50) or control (n = 50). In the intervention group, pneumatic leg compression was initiated before induction of anaesthesia. In the control group, pneumatic leg compression was initiated 20 min after anaesthesia induction. The primary outcome was the incidence of post-induction hypotension in these groups. Post-induction hypotension was defined as systolic blood pressure < 90 mmHg during the first 20 min after induction. Haemodynamic variables and area under the curve of post-induction systolic blood pressure over time were assessed. Complications associated with pneumatic leg compression were recorded, including: peripheral neuropathy; compartment syndrome; extensive bullae beneath the leg sleeves; and pulmonary thromboembolism. The incidence of post-induction hypotension decreased in the pneumatic leg compression group compared with that in the control group; 5 (10%) vs. 29 (58%), respectively, p < 0.001. In the pneumatic leg compression group, the lowest systolic, diastolic and mean blood pressures 20 min after induction of anaesthesia were significantly greater than the control group. Pneumatic leg compression resulted in an increased area under the curve of systolic blood pressure in the first 20 min after induction, p = 0.001. There were no pneumatic leg compression-related complications. Pneumatic leg compression reduced post-induction hypotension in elderly patients undergoing robot-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy, suggesting that it is an effective and safe intervention to prevent post-induction hypotension among elderly patients undergoing general anaesthesia.

RESUMO

Infants are occasionally injured while playing with their mother's eyebrow razor, and we have treated several infants with flexor tendon injuries, which in some cases were accompanied by damage to the corresponding digital nerves and/or vessels. Here, we report the outcomes in a retrospective case series, with a review of literature. Between January 2013 and October 2019, 8 patients who met our inclusion criteria were initially investigated. The inclusion criteria were: (1) injured by an eyebrow razor during fiddling or grasping, and (2) the availability of complete medical records and radiological data, with follow-up of at least 2 years. The core sutures were performed using a modified Becker (4-strand) method for flexor digitorum profundus (FDP). Nerves and/or vessels were repaired under microscopy. A long-arm mitten cast was then applied, with the fingers slightly flexed in a resting position, for 3 weeks. Then, the children were allowed to return to unrestricted activity. Formal outpatient hand therapy was not performed. Mean postnatal age was 6.3 months. The FDP was injured in zones 1 and 2 in 3 and 5 infants, respectively. Most of the infants were injured near a dressing table, in the bedroom used by their mother. The colors of these razors were all bright, except for one achromatic (white) razor. All of the razors had been left uncovered, without their cap, or were left open in the case of hinged razors. At a mean follow-up of 35.8 months, range of motion was evaluated by the Strickland and modified Strickland methods; all results were "excellent". We encountered no significant complications in any digit: neuroma, tendon retear, stiffness or necrosis. Uncapped or unfolded colorful eyebrow razors pose a high risk of tendon section with concurrent neurovascular injury in infants. Although satisfactory outcomes can be expected, it seems important to prevent the injury through fastidious parental care and changing razor design and color. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level IV, retrospective case series.

RESUMO

Future improvements in particle accelerator performance are predicated on increasingly accurate online modeling of accelerators. Hysteresis effects in magnetic, mechanical, and material components of accelerators are often neglected in online accelerator models used to inform control algorithms, even though reproducibility errors from systems exhibiting hysteresis are not negligible in high precision accelerators. In this Letter, we combine the classical Preisach model of hysteresis with machine learning techniques to efficiently create nonparametric, high-fidelity models of arbitrary systems exhibiting hysteresis. We experimentally demonstrate how these methods can be used in situ, where a hysteresis model of an accelerator magnet is combined with a Bayesian statistical model of the beam response, allowing characterization of magnetic hysteresis solely from beam-based measurements. Finally, we explore how using these joint hysteresis-Bayesian statistical models allows us to overcome optimization performance limitations that arise when hysteresis effects are ignored.

RESUMO

SETTING: Five referral hospitals, South Korea.OBJECTIVE: To assess epidemiological changes in TB before and during the COVID-19 pandemic.DESIGN: This was a multicentre cohort study of 3,969 patients diagnosed with TB.RESULTS: We analysed 3,453 patients diagnosed with TB prior to the COVID-19 pandemic (January 2016-February 2020) and 516 during the pandemic (March-November 2020). During the pandemic, the number of patients visits declined by 15% from the previous 4-year average, and the number of patients diagnosed with TB decreased by 17%. Patients diagnosed during the pandemic were older than those diagnosed before the pandemic (mean age, 60.2 vs. 56.6 years, P < 0.001). The proportion of patients to have primary TB at a younger age (births after 1980) among those diagnosed with TB was significantly lower during the pandemic than before (17.8% in 2020 vs. 23.5% in 2016, 24.0% in 2017, 22.5% in 2018, 23.5% in 2019; P = 0.005).CONCLUSIONS: The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in a reduction in the number of visits to respiratory departments, leading to fewer patients being diagnosed with TB. However, our results suggest that universal personal preventive measures help to suppress TB transmission in regions with intermediate TB burden.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The pathogens involved in central nervous system (CNS) infections are various, such as viruses, bacteria, and fungi, so a syndromic approach can be required. In addition, since their rapid and accurate detection is very crucial, molecular diagnostics using cerebrospinal fluid is becoming the emerging standard method. METHODS: The study was conducted retrospectively to identify the incidence and distribution patterns of the pathogens according to gender, age, season, and month and to analyze their codetection from August 2017 to July 2020. It was also conducted to investigate turn-around times (TATs) according to the detection method. The detection methods were FilmArray® Meningitis/Encephalitis (M/E) method (FilmArray), Cepheid® Xpert EV assay (Xpert), and Multiplex PCR method for five species of bacteria. RESULTS: The overall incidence for at least one pathogen was 13.9% (346/2,496). The highest incidence was shown in age group 4 (3 - 6 years), with 27.4%. The detection rates by FilmArray, Xpert, and Multiplex PCR method were 39.8%, 41.7%, and 0.4%, respectively. Enterovirus (EV) showed the highest incidence rate, which accounted for 37.0%. The distribution of the pathogens according to the age groups were the highest in age group 4, with 47.5% (168/354), followed by 27.4% (97/354) in age group 5. Of the ten cases in which bacteria were detected, S. agalactiae accounted for 60.0% (6/10), most of which occurred in age group 1. E. coli K1, L. monocytogenes, and N. meningitidis were not detected. In the viral distribution, EV accounted for the highest proportion in all age groups. The overall proportion of EV accounted for 87.6% (310/354), followed by human parechovirus with 2.8% (10/354). The most commonly detected season was summer, comprising 75.1%. A total of eight cases of co-detection with two pathogens accounted for 1.6% (8/507) in FilmArray. In FilmArray, all TATs were found to be shorter than Xpert. CONCLUSIONS: The information on the incidence and distribution patterns of the pathogens causing CNS infections and their rapid detection are critically important to clinicians in the management of immunocompromised patients, elderly, and children. The expeditious molecular diagnostics for these pathogens would be valuable in medical decisions by clinicians.

RESUMO

AIM: To identify odontogenesis-promoting compounds and examine the molecular mechanism underlying enhanced odontoblast differentiation and tooth formation. METHODOLOGY: Five different nymphaeols, nymphaeol B (NB), isonymphaeol B (INB), nymphaeol A (NA), 3'-geranyl-naringenin (GN) and nymphaeol C (NC) were isolated from the fruit of Macaranga tanarius. The cytotoxic effect of nymphaeols on human DPSCs was observed using a 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. The effect of nymphaeols on odontoblast differentiation was analysed with Alizarin Red S staining and odontoblast marker expression was assessed using real-time polymerase chain reaction and Western blot analysis. The molecular mechanism was investigated with Western blot analysis. In order to examine the effect of INB on dentine formation in the developing tooth germ, INB-soaked beads were placed under the tooth bud explants in the collagen gel; thereafter, the tooth bud explant-bead complexes were implanted into the sub-renal capsules for 3 weeks. Tooth root formation was analysed using micro-computed tomography and histological analysis. Data are presented as mean ± standard error (SEM) values of three independent experiments, and results are compared using a two-tailed Student's t-test. The data were considered to have statistical significance when the P-value was less than 0.05. RESULTS: Three of the compounds, NB, INB, and GN, did not exert a cytotoxic effect on human DPSCs. However, INB was most effective in promoting the deposition of calcium minerals in vitro (P < 0.001) and induced the expression of odontogenic marker genes (P < 0.05). Moreover, this compound strongly induced the phosphorylation of mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinases and protein kinase B (AKT) (P < 0.05). The inhibition of p38 MAP, c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK), and AKT substantially suppressed the INB-induced odontoblast differentiation (P < 0.001). In addition, isonymphaeol B significantly induced the formation of dentine and elongation of the tooth root in vivo (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Prenylflavonoids, including INB, exerted stimulatory effects on odontoblast differentiation and tooth root and dentine formation via the MAP kinase and AKT signalling pathways. These results suggest that nymphaeols could stimulate the repair processes for dentine defects or injuries.

RESUMO

The nematic phase in iron based superconductors (IBSs) has attracted attention with a notion that it may provide important clue to the superconductivity. A series of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) studies were performed to understand the origin of the nematic phase. However, there is lack of ARPES study on LaFeAsO nematic phase. Here, we report the results of ARPES studies of the nematic phase in LaFeAsO. Degeneracy breaking between the [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] hole bands near the [Formula: see text] and M point is observed in the nematic phase. Different temperature dependent band splitting behaviors are observed at the [Formula: see text] and M points. The energy of the band splitting near the M point decreases as the temperature decreases while it has little temperature dependence near the [Formula: see text] point. The nematic nature of the band shift near the M point is confirmed through a detwin experiment using a piezo device. Since a momentum dependent splitting behavior has been observed in other iron based superconductors, our observation confirms that the behavior is a universal one among iron based superconductors.

RESUMO

AIM: To determine useful imaging features for differentiating hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) categorised as LR-M from non-HCC malignancies in using the Liver Imaging-Reporting and Data System (LI-RADS) version 2018 on gadoxetic acid-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients at high-risk for HCC with surgically confirmed HCCs (n=131) and non-HCC malignancies (n=90) and who had undergone gadoxetic acid-enhanced MRI were included. LI-RADS categories were assigned to identify hepatic observations defined as LR-M by two radiologists. Major and ancillary imaging features of hepatic observation with targetoid appearance including intratumoural septa were compared between HCCs and non-HCC malignancies. A classification tree analysis (CTA) was applied to differentiate high-risk HCCs from non-HCC malignancies in the LR-M category. RESULTS: A total of 36 HCCs (27.5%) and 70 non-HCC malignancies (77.8%) were assigned as LR-M. An enhancing capsule (p=0.0293), blood products in the mass (p=0.0393), non-targetoid restriction (p=0.018), and a septum (p=0.0053) were significantly predictive of HCC. On CTA, the presence of a septum was an initial predictor for a high probability of HCC followed by non-targetoid restriction. The CTA model has a sensitivity of 63.9%, specificity of 90%, and accuracy of 81.1% for differentiating HCC assigned LR-M from non-HCC malignancy. CONCLUSION: A considerable proportion of HCCs could have been categorised as LR-M as they had a targetoid appearance on gadoxetic acid-enhanced MRI. An intratumoural septum and non-targetoid restriction as well as enhancing capsule and blood products in the mass may be useful for differentiating HCC assigned to LR-M from non-HCC malignancy on gadoxetic acid-enhanced MRI.

RESUMO

AIM: To compare the diagnostic performance of the 2017 (v2017) and 2018 versions (v2018) of the Liver Imaging-Reporting and Data System (LI-RADS) for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) using gadoxetic acid-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (Gd-EOB-MRI) and to evaluate the effect in v2018. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Treatment-naive patients at high-risk for HCC who underwent Gd-EOB-MRI were included. The LI-RADS categories were assigned according to v2017 and v2018. The diagnostic performances were compared between v2017 and v2018 according to the size and combination of imaging features. RESULTS: A total of 117 patients with 137 observations were identified, including 89 HCCs; 76.2% (64/84) of observations with threshold growth were re-classified as subthreshold growth when using v2018 instead of v2017. The final categories changed in nine (14%) cases. For the combination of LR-5/LR-5V, there were no significant differences in sensitivity and specificity between the two versions (sensitivity, 64% versus 58.4%; specificity, 87.5% versus 85.4%; all p>0.05). For the combination of LR-4 and LR-5/5V, the diagnostic performance of v2018 was inferior to that of v2017 when considering only major features (accuracy, 86.1% versus 80.3%, respectively; p=0.013), particularly in observations measuring 10-20 mm, but was comparable after adding the ancillary features (accuracy, 86.9% versus 86.1%, respectively; p=1.00). CONCLUSION: In LI-RADS v2018, although a considerable number of observations re-classified subthreshold growth, changes in the assigned categories were insignificant; overall diagnostic performance was comparable to that of v2017, but v2018 might emphasise the value of ancillary features in combination with major features for determining the probability of HCC.

RESUMO

A record number of ^{100}Sn nuclei was detected and new isotopic species toward the proton dripline were discovered at the RIKEN Nishina Center. Decay spectroscopy was performed with the high-efficiency detector arrays WAS3ABi and EURICA. Both the half-life and the ß-decay end point energy of ^{100}Sn were measured more precisely than the literature values. The value and the uncertainty of the resulting strength for the pure 0^{+}→1^{+} Gamow-Teller decay was improved to B_{GT}=4.4_{-0.7}^{+0.9}. A discrimination between different model calculations was possible for the first time, and the level scheme of ^{100}In is investigated further.

RESUMO

The ß-delayed γ-ray spectroscopy of neutron-rich ^{123,125}Ag isotopes is investigated at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory of RIKEN, and the long-predicted 1/2^{-} ß-emitting isomers in ^{123,125}Ag are identified for the first time. With the new experimental results, the systematic trend of energy spacing between the lowest 9/2^{+} and 1/2^{-} levels is extended in Ag isotopes up to N=78, providing a clear signal for the reduction of the Z=40 subshell gap in Ag towards N=82. Shell-model calculations with the state-of-the-art V_{MU} plus M3Y spin-orbit interaction give a satisfactory description of the low-lying states in ^{123,125}Ag. The tensor force is found to play a crucial role in the evolution of the size of the Z=40 subshell gap. The observed inversion of the single-particle levels around ^{123}Ag can be well interpreted in terms of the monopole shift of the π1g_{9/2} orbitals mainly caused by the increasing occupation of ν1h_{11/2} orbitals.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The aim was to analyze the characteristics and progression of cognitive dysfunction in non-demented idiopathic rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (iRBD) patients with baseline olfactory function. METHODS: From a prospective polysomnography-confirmed iRBD cohort, 25 patients (16 patients in 2-year follow-up) and 13 normal controls were included. Initial and 2-year follow-up cognitive functions were analyzed with olfactory function and 18 F-fluorinated-N-3-fluoropropyl-2ß-carboxymethoxy-3ß-(4-iodophenyl)-nortropane (18 F-FP-CIT) uptake in deep nuclei initially. RESULTS: Idiopathic RBD patients had impaired attention, memory and executive function compared to controls. Baseline cognitive tests were comparable between the iRBD subgroups with and without hyposmia. 18 F-FP-CIT uptake tended to be lower in the hyposmic group than in the normosmic group. The olfactory test score was positively correlated with amygdala uptake in iRBD patients (P = 0.027). After 2 years, visuospatial and verbal memory dysfunction worsened more in hyposmics than in normosmics. Lower initial olfactory test score was associated with more severe declines in verbal memory function. CONCLUSIONS: Hyposmia may be a predictive sign of cognitive decline in iRBD patients.

RESUMO

Thermal comfort could indicate human thermal sensation when exposed to a local meteorological condition. Because humans can suffer illness when exposed to heat or even die, it is essential to assess human comfort levels to increased temperature and to provide this information to the public. This study aims to estimate thermal comfort using the human heat balance model combined with a numerical meteorological model in Seoul mega city during the heat wave periods experienced during 2016. The gridded thermal comfort index of physiological subjective temperature (PST) was calculated based on the Man-Environment Heat Exchange (MENEX) model, which used as inputs the meteorological parameters, clothing insulations, and metabolic rates. High-resolution meteorological parameters were obtained by coupling Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model with Building Effect Parameterization (BEP) + Building Energy Model (BEM) using detailed urban classification. The modeling results showed that the PST distribution has a clearly heterogeneous spatial distribution during the heat wave period. The high PST values were largely found in the residential area during the day, due to the high temperature and low wind speed associated with high-density buildings, and the daily maximum PST reached a very hot level (44.1-54.0 °C). Our study suggested that the human heat balance model combined with the numerical meteorological model could be used to provide more reliable information about thermal comfort to groups that may be vulnerable to the effects of heat waves in complex urban environments.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: This study is an epidemiologic investigation of nosocomial severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV) transmission among healthcare workers (HCWs) after contact with an index patient. The aim of this study was to determine whether exposure to blood or bloody respiratory secretion is associated with human-to-human transmission of SFTSV. METHODS: Eleven days after the index patient died, two HCWs who had close exposure to the patient presented with typical symptoms of SFTS. An epidemiological investigation was conducted on all 25 HCWs who had been in close contact with the index patient. Clinical and laboratory data were collected, and transmission rate before and after the index patient had haemorrhagic manifestations was analysed. RESULTS: Among 25 HCWs who had direct contact with the index patient, five HCWs were confirmed to have SFTS. All five HCWs had contact to blood or bloody respiratory secretions of the index patient without adequate use of personal protective equipment (PPE). No HCW with contact before haemorrhagic manifestations of the index patient contracted SFTS. Overall, the transmission rate was higher for HCWs who had contact after the index patient had haemorrhagic manifestations (33.3%, five of 15 HCWs, vs. 0%, zero of ten HCWs, p 0.041). CONCLUSIONS: In HCWs who are inadequately protected, person-to-person transmission of SFTSV may be associated with contact with blood or bloody respiratory secretions. Therefore, universal precaution and full PPE is highly recommended for protection against SFTSV when there are signs of bleeding.
